I am creating this thread for those interested in traveling as tourists to Rangoon but are unsure of the post-cyclone situation there. I would appreciate if locals would please update us as the situation changes; you%26#39;re our best source of information! And to all those affected by the cyclone, our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Current Situation in Rangoon
Yangon is slowly back . Broand Band (Wireless Internet Connection) are back since 6 May. Some place have get back the electricity. Some phone lines also back.Water line also back.
For Tourist ,it is not much effected. All the sightseen are opened back. Shwedagone Pagoda is opened. For the hotels , most not effected only no electricity and they have to run their own generators. As far as I know, Governor%26#39;s House(former, pansea) is damaged and closed for 2 months.Their Road to Mandalay also came down for dock in Yangon and caught in cyclone and badly damage.
Other tourist area , Bagan, Mandalay ,Inle Lake and Ngapali beach is not effected at all. Ngwe Saung beach and Chaungthar beach also no much damage.
Back to Yangon again, most of the main road trees debris haven been cleared . Traffic is normal and fuel price also back to pre-cyclone although some good%26#39;s price going up . Shopping center are re-opened but reduce opening hours to 6 pm instead of 9 pm.
Current Situation in Rangoon
%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;Communication%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt; All important and major phone lines locally are good. All GSMs are roaming back but some home lines. Internet access is back by any means (ADSL,BB and IPstar satellite).
%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;Transportation%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt; All major roads are swept out of dumps. so it makes possible for anyone travels inside the City. (but some streets of townships still smell stinks. goshh..) All networked traffice with Yangon are re-open. So you can travel outside Yangon by bus, air. Water way is only down to Delta region and it is wise not to travel.
%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;Meals%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt; Big restaurants such as monsoon, sabai sabai, etc..etc.. open as well as small ones. Food are back in normalcy yet there are some concerns about meats if they were not fresh. But it cannot happen in a tourist restaurant. However awareness is your good friend. Always drink bottled water and it is available back now on stores everywhere in Yangon.
%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;Accommodation%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt; Small lodges may have problems with electricity and those who endure that will be OK. Almost all 4-5 stars hotel get their electricity back on time. Electricity is not a problem. The skyrocketed prices of last week are getting normal.
Tourist highlights: Every places in Yangon are open yet some of them has ';impacts'; from Nargis.
