Going for a year - what to take?

Hi

My family are moving to Yangon for a year. To all those that have been, if you were to be there long term, what stuff would you take with you? Foods etc you can%26#39;t get, useful items etc?

Cheers.

Going for a year - what to take?

Wow, it should be an adventure for you and your family but in a good way. Many things are now avaialble in Yangon at the moment but if you are very particular about certain foods, items (i.e. toilet paper and tissue for me) you should certainly take ur own.

This is my list whenever I go (but keep in mind this is for my short term trips):

1) Toilet paper (its rough in yangon)

2) Tissue (rough)

3) Mosquito repellent, chap sticks, Sun block

4) Wellies or rain boots (raining season is at least 4 months)

5) Contact lens solution (have many glasses shops but since i am putting this in my eyes its a must)

6) Spices (i dont mean curry since that is readily available)

7) good pair of sneakers, comfy walking shoes

8) Cotton clothing and light sweaters/light coats (rarely dips below 60 degrees)

9) any cooking utensils you cannot live without

10) All snacks you can carry

If you have any additional questions please feel free to contact me. I%26#39;ll be going there next weekend for 2 week vacation so will reply upon my return. mhb0308@gmail.com

My wife usually carries one large suitcase in either hand, a lage rucksack on her back and a couple of medium shoulder bags - i am also training her to carry another medium to large load on her head(like they do in Africa!) i usually carry my havana cigars and lighter, plus all of the cash / passports / and travel documents. A true partnership !!!

Thanks so much guys, any other thoughts just feel free to do a mind dump. I really wouldn%26#39;t have thought of the wellies and now will put them on the %26#39;must take%26#39; list. And the herbs and spices etc.

TC.

Hello,

We found that Yangon%26#39;s not as convenient as Thailand but not as bad as the rest of Myanmar. To find good stuff %26amp; get things done, you need to do some homework once you get here to know where to get what, esp when there%26#39;s no proper ads/info. Don%26#39;t hesitate to ask the expats if you cant speak the local language. For hubby %26amp; I, we were advised to get a book %26#39;Golden Guide To Yangon%26#39; - prepared by International Friendship Group, worth $5 that goes to charity. This book helps a lot. Can find at most big hotels, or can contact me if cant find anywhere.

The list by milo626 is good. A few to add:

1. Good toilet paper %26amp; tissue can be bought at big supermarkets, i.e. Citymart, Capital.

2. Dont go crazy on the spice. One good supplier here is Sharky%26#39;s (famous among expats. One behind Savoy Hotel)

3. Dont forget good supply of your special or fav toiletries, skincare.

4. If kids are involve here, bring good toys they cannot live without.

5. For medicines you get over pharmacy counters, you can get them here.

6. If you like books %26amp; mags, you would miss them here so bring your own (unless you read local language). Foreign newspaper available but limited %26amp; pricey.

7. I%26#39;m yet to find any good swimwear shops here so you may want to bring yours.

These are what I can think of right now (it%26#39;s 12.30am), 28deg C outside.

Happy packing.

Just got back from Yangon and it was absolutely fastastic as always.

A few things to add to my previous list of must haves:

1) a hat and sunglasses, it can get awfully sunny

2) Cleansing cloths or wipes, trust me, it can get dusty, and very sticky very quick so its a good idea to have some along

3) Might want to bring ur own medicine, over the counter etc, just in case since some of the medicines sold there may not be the what u r used to

4) Flashlight!!! Its just good to have

I completely forgot about the supermarket/shopping centers in Yangon, you can absolutely buy toilet paper ... soft toilet paper and tissues. So may not need to lug around a year supply of it.

If I think of anythign else will post and if you ahve any questions feel free to e-mail me. mhb0308@gmail.com

I%26#39;m actually planning to go back in december 2008 again so pretty pretty excited.

Plan a Leave trip to Thailand, travel is cheap and you can stock up with luggage allowance.

Thanks again all. What with cyclone Nargis I am now expecting a further delay. Husband is wondering whether to bring his chainsaw... Gumboots (wellies) have moved well up the list, etc...

Hi again

I just read on the Yangon International School website that bicycles (and motorbikes) are not permitted in Yangon. Can anyone verify this? Does it just mean the city centre or the whole of Yangon? I was going to bring my mountain bike...

TC

Bicycle is permitted in most of the roads but not motorcycle. Motorcycle is not permitted to ride in hole of Yangon except government official. It is useful for mountain baik in Yangon. Bring it.
