Try to contact to Mr. Ye who is independent licensed tour guide. He can arrange everything what you need and will escort and guide you for the whole trip. We found him on this forum with a lot of good comments and after we exchanged several mails, we let him arranged for our trip in November. It is the right way of using money in Myanmar to support the locals because we stay at nice, clean local run Hotels. Due to the own arrangement without taxes or something the price offered by Ye is much more cheaper than others becasue we inquired several travel agencies before we decided to book to him. Ye is very honest young and active man who can speck good English and will teach you history, custom, traditions of Myanmar With his impressive knowledges. Please contact to ye700@mail4u.com.mm.

Simonrw, you have made 5 posts of which several have been deleted by tripadvisr. They are all spam ads for the tour guide “ye”. Do you mind explaining to the forum why you continue this ad campaign?

Well! All right! mosegrisen,

When I was planning to travel Myanmar I didn%26#39;t have enough info of the country and I worked out on the Internet to find the information. After I find out on this forum and LP thorn tree forum... I found YE with a lot of comments of his old guests. Then I tried to get info of the country direct from YE through his e-mail several times. Then we got good contact because of the forums. The point is that finally we got very nice vacation in Myanmar with his arrangements which and WE JUST WANT TO SHARE OUR EXPERIENCES TO SOMEONE WHO IS THE SAME SITUATION WITH US THE BEGINNING and it probably could be personal but it will be useful to them or someone. Not you because I just want to share the info to someone who need it. OK! If you don%26#39;t need it, you can forget about it.

Thanks! MOSEGRIESN!

imosegrisen! Here is another reason! HE requested me to send some comment about him if I satisfied his services. That is why I post some comment about him what I feel him. I saw other traveler’s comments concern with their drivers or guide on this forum. Then I think you will be clear!

Simonrw, what is the weather like in Slovenia at the moment.. nice and hot I take it:-)

What I am clear about after reading your self promotion on this and other fora... is that I would never use your services.

I am not sure that I understand the repartee between Simonrw and mosegrisen, but I do know Mr. YE. My wife and I recently took an eight day tour in Myanmar with Mr. YE. It was a great tour and YE was a great guide at a very reasonable price.

Merry X%26#39;mas to all colleague tour operator...in myanmar!!

  • Trip to Myanmar late November 2008

    Hello everyone,

I am planning a trip to Myanmar for late November early Dec, Do you think it will be ok to travel around by this dates? I am also interested in photography, and would like to know if I will have any problem with my photographic equipment when entering the country. I had to postpone the trip last year and I am not sure if it is worth visiting late this year, as for all the devastation with Nargis. Also some help on the itinerary would be apreciated, I am interested in nature an culture, and I ahve about 2-3 weeks to spend there.

    Many thanks in advance.

Trip to Myanmar late November 2008

    Agent09

    Bon dia.

We are back in Myanmar at the end of December for a couple of weeks and are not considering changing our plans as we expect that most of the areas geared to tourists will be back to normal-we heard that all of the main areas north of Yangon were untouched.

We have never had problems taking photos , although many sites charge extra for camera/video.

As far as a detailed nature/culture try the Lonely Planet book ';Myanmar';.

    Should we go to Burma?

We had booked our trip through Burma for early February, but with the recent history we are now troubled as to whether we would be doing the local Burmese people a favour by travelling there at the moment. It could cause them more problems than we are worth. Would we be helping more by waiting to travel later?

    Should we go to Burma?

Some might say that you would be helping them more by going. I can’t really see that there could be a downside for local people. People employed in the tourist trade are going to be very happy to see you and very unhappy if we don%26#39;t. Difficult to separate politics from business and issues such as being able to get travel insurance if foreign affairs advise ';essential travel only'; has to be taken into account.

I was not planning to go there this year and have made other plans already but am now thinking about changing my plans so that I do go. Not for political reason, merely because I%26#39;m thinking that a few weeks worth of travel expenses may as well go to people in need as to people in a place like Thailand where they already have plenty of business and there are lots of places I haven’t been to yet....... I suggest you keep an eye on the developments and make an informed decision while considering your own safety and security.

    Should we go to Burma?

Thanks for that. I feel in quite a dilema about this.

    Dear Pambo1,

As a ordinary Myanmar citizen ,stay in Myanmar, we need you all to be around for many reasons. Honestly speaking, we need your dollars ,to continue life of so many people who depend on tour industry . At the other hand, you can see with your own eyes and can judge . At the same time more foreigner around mean more eyes from the world.

For safety , Myanmar is safe place that everyone agree . Please feel free to visit Myanmar if you really want to help ordinary people, we all want you to be in Myanmar.

As we always mention , only a few tourist dollars go to government , such as visa fees, airport tax and entrance fees. More of the dollars, you spent go to ordinary people.

    mgzaymin,

Is there any cyber cafe operating now? Or, any internet access at all? Heard that it%26#39;s been shut down, wanting to find out how true it is.

    Thanks.

    oneleene x

Oh yes... nothing politic; just making sure the communication to family is guaranteed during my stay there.

    cheers x

Yes, it is back to normal again and that%26#39;s why I can able to read and reply to you .To be honest , internet communication is on and off . It is off again about a week at end of last month and beginning of this month. However e-mail and phone lines are working.

    Hi

I feel a bit scared to go Burma also because the troubles but i met one lady in the embassy who told me lot of things in Burma and said it is safe to go there also. I found out that she is reporter. So i supposed she visits there often so I will be in Burma during on 1-12Dec. Anyway, I will keep you update.

Well come from Burma and you will know the true soon. Myanmar is safe for travel and peoples always wel-come the foreigner. If possible , I would like to request one thing after your trip, please write your experience , your finding and your feeling on Myanmar. We would like to know.

    this is quite a difficult question to somebody outside Burma. See somebody says there '; It%26#39;s like people from outside the World is ';watching Titanic'; and say sorry, feel sorry giving a remark this film could get ';Oscar'; or gold medal award. But I supposed we in the movie are drowning soon. ';

Regarding this issue Interesting page is http://peacehousetravel.googlepages.com

Yes, go. We recently returned. We had a wonderful guide, Mr. YE, (ye700@mail4u.com.mm) who accompanied us on the entire trip. Myanmar and its people are beautiful. I have travelled over the world including all of SE Asia and this is one of the cleanest countries I have been in. In addition travel is a bargain.

Suggestions for 7 days in Myanmar, airlines, hotels, tours

Wife and I are independent travellers planning a 3 1/2 week trip to Southeast Asia in December. Flying international using UAL points -- not the best flights or airlines but free. We will be arriving in Yangon to start our adventure. Planning 2 nights Yangon (after 31 hour flight from Florida), 2 nights Bagan, 2 nights Inle, 1 night Yangon. Looking for Myanmar hotel suggestions and best ways to book them -- generally trying to stay under $100/night US double. Is it best to book this itinerary as a ';tour'; or is it reasonable to just do it on our own? Any suggested sights or changes in itinerary appreciated. Thoughts on the balloon over Bagan tour ($250pp) -- is it best AM or PM or should we skip it?

We leave Yangon for Siem Riep (Le Meridien 4 days) then to Phuket (Holiday Inn 2 days) then Khao Lak (Le Meridien and Raft Houses in Khao Sok 9 days total) and finally Bangkok (Royal Orchid 2 days). Hotels chosen due to SPG and Holiday Inn memberships (free).

Suggestions re booking Discover pass on Bangkok Airlines? Will the flight to Siem Riep via Bangkok require 2 coupons or 1 coupon; same question flying Siem Riep to Phuket? Other cheaper/better flight options appreciated.

Suggestions for sights around Siem Riep? In Phuket we plan a day-long speed boat trip around the Phi Phi Islands. In Khao Lak we%26#39;ll spend at least 3 nights and possibly more in Khao Sok national park on national park raft houses on the reservoir -- rest of the time is just to kick back and enjoy the beach/hotel. (Stayed there 2 years ago and loved it -- but did only 1 night on the lake in Khao Sok that time.)

Does the sky train run from the new Airport to downtown Bangkok yet?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions ...

Suggestions for 7 days in Myanmar, airlines, hotels, tours

    For Myanmar.

    1. Best way to book the hotel is through travel agent.Hotels in Myanmar have to rely on travel agent and they have great discount . Direct to hotel may more expensive than travel agent.

    2. In Yangon,Bagan and Mandaly most of the hotels are under USD 100/ . Only few hotels have more than USD 100/- . December is consider high season and you have to pay more. Sedona Hotel, (Yangon and Mandalay) , operated by Sedona Hotel International Singapore, Traders Hotel , Yangon ( Operated by Shangrila), ex:- Hotel Nikko Royal Lake( Back to Thailand owner and Name changed to Thai name) , Grand Plaza Parkroyal, Kandawgyi Palace Hotel in Yangon are foreign management.

    3. In Mandalay, Sedona Hotel, Mandalay Hill Resort, Hotel by red cannel, Rupar Mandalar Hotel are recommended.

    4. In Bagan, The Hotel @ Tharabar Gate, Bagan Golf Resort, Bagan Thiripyitsaya Sakura , Thazin Garden , Bagan Hotel, Bagan Thante Hotel.

    5. in Inle, the price under 100/- will be Treasure Resort, Amazing Nyaung Shwe, Paramout Inle, Shwe Hintar , . I am not sure about Inle Resort and Inle Lake view, but they may have over 100/ . The best hotel in Inle is Inle Princess Hotel.

    6. You should not skip ';balloon over bagan'; See some comment on '; Balloon Over Bagan'; on this forum.

Suggestions for 7 days in Myanmar, airlines, hotels, tours

Just a couple of comments on mz good recommendations.

Consider the Savoy (small but in a nice position, with pool) in Yangon or possibly Inya Lake Hotel which has twins at $50 inc breakfast and although somewhat away from down town , has a tranquil position and is 20 min from airport (ideal for a tired arrival and also for your almost certain dawn flight up country)

Sky Train was not connected to Airport in January , although under construction.

Who knows whether it will be finished this year?

    Hi Ann %26amp; Steve,

To avoid dear price and to have rooms for sure, you are strongly suggested to book in advance. December is a peak time and all hotels here are small type with few rooms, except in Yangon (Like traders, Sedona and Nikko royal lake) and Mandalay (Sedona, Mandalay Hill Resort).

Your budget is pretty workable to your accommodation within 4 star category in Myanmar. Regarding hotel name you got it here, you can goggle it to search for more information how it looks and so forth. Individual difference may exist. If you have any preference we can minimize the recommendation.

Regarding balloons over Bagan, it depends how you love to watch the sun, because they operate the balloon before the sunrise and sundown. To me, PM is the best to see.

There are plenty of sights offer in a myanmar web portal called myanmars dot net. You should check it out.

Regarding Bangkok Airways, I%26#39;m afraid Bangkok, Yangon and Siem Reap all the destinations you intend to travel are not included in the discovery airpass program of Bangkok Airways. But you can buy separately. In this case, you are going to have 2 coupons minimum for three destinations in and out.

If you think about the beach, you should consider on the beaches of Myanmar, Ngapali or Ngwe Saung. All hotels are seafront and charming nature.

Thanks for the replies. Could someone please elaborate on the Bangkok Discovery Airpass. Does it operate for example from Yangon to Siem Riep and does that flight require 2 coupons (1 from Yangon to Bangkok and 1 from Bangkok to Siem Riep -- even though we would not stayover in Bangkok but simply connect?)

    Ann %26amp; Steve

Yangon to Siem Reap must go in 2 coupons traditionally. You can do it so. But to some sources, it is sometimes cheaper to get a ticket to Bangkok from Yangon, Siem Reap from Bangkok separately. separate tickets but same company! I hope it%26#39;s clear.

Hi guys, my wife and I have been traveling the world for the past 7 years. We have been to very spectacular places (last November Nepal and TIBET!!!!!!!!!!!!) and my wife has alway%26#39;s had a dream of going to Burma. Sincerely,

    Travel partners

I would like to go to Myanmar end of November 2008 or end of March 2009 and I would like to find one or more travel companions to share the cost of hiring guides/taxi/car and to have more fun than traveling alone. I don%26#39;t mind paying extra for a single room but I can also share a room with a woman. Also, I would like to spend few days in Cambodia. I can get maximum of 3 weeks of vacation. I am middle aged woman from Vancouver, Canada and I have traveled all around the world. If anyone is interested or knows how I can join a group, please let me know.

    Travel partners

If you don%26#39;t mind to go with anyone, you can join with tour agent. Usually, they have regular departure.

    Travel partners

Can you, please, recommend few of them? I have noticed that some agencies can arrange the tour but the price for 1 person is double then for two or more. It is not just single room supplement but like that the whole tour is organized just for you so you pay all expenses.

    Things to do in Ngapali

We will be in Ngapali in December, and we were wondering if there are any other things to do than relaxing on the beach. Is there any bar to go and drink a cocktail while enjoying the sunset? Any island to hop to? Any village to visit?

    Thanks!

    Things to do in Ngapali

    You have covered most things.

All the beach hotels have a sunset bar so take your pick.

Boat trips can take you to the islands but mainly for snorkeling and not landing.

Worth going to Thandwe village, a very typical Rackine town with little geared to tourists, and worth a morning spent looking around- especially the market, temples and mosque.

    Enjoy.

    Things to do in Ngapali

    Hi Agent09,

I normally go to Ngapali in December or January. I have been in February as well. Those are the best times to go.

Apart from swimming and lazily sunbathing or lying in the shade in the cool breeze with a coconut (when it gets quite warm in the middle of the day) I would walk along the beach, south-ward, to ';the end'; of the beach - (beyond which is the fishing village) - where there is a little island just a few yards/meters off-shore known as the ';Paradise Island';. Depending on the tide, you can wade across to the bridge; or if the tide is out, you can walk to the bridge. There you get a good panoramic view of both the Ngapali Beach on the northern side and the fishing village (mentioned above) on the southern side.

If you can rise early, go to the fishing village when the boats come in early in the morning, buy some catch, and have a barbecue! I am sure you hotel will be able to arrange the fire etc for you.

You can also arrange for a boat out to explore nearby islands (perhaps take a picnic out)or go snorkelling/diving. (You might want to do it more than once!)

Walk northwards to the rock-cliff and explore (you will have to cross the little stream at the north end of the beach)

Explore the villages along the main road (You can%26#39;t get lost; there is only one main road!) or as mentioned earlier go up to Thande Town on a local bus. (If you can, you can ask the hotel to arrange a car to take you around in Thande)

Evenings are always wonderful to walk along the beach from late afternoon to early in the night/(later if you wish) and ';bar hop'; at the hotels along the beach. Make sure you got a good torch!

    Bon voyage!

  • Trip to Myanmar mid-June

    Hi again everyone,

Now I%26#39;m in SE Asia (specifically Vietnam) and I%26#39;m scheduled to go to Myanmar on June 15. I%26#39;m still trying to decide whether to go. So I%26#39;m asking for advice. Obviously, I don%26#39;t want to get in the way of relief efforts.

I was wanting to visit Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay, and (maybe) Inle from June 15-26.

I have airline tickets from Bangkok to Yangon, but no hotel reservations or domestic airline tickets. I tried to e-mail a couple of local travel agencies a few days ago, but I never heard back from anyone. I think maybe the trip is just not feasible at this time.

Does anyone have any advice or thoughts? I was hoping that by going I might even help the economy in a very small way since I think there probably aren%26#39;t many tourists in areas that previously relied on tourists.

    thanks, travelgail

    Trip to Myanmar mid-June

    Hi Travelgail,

Where you plan to go i.e. Bagan, Mandalay and Inle are well out of the way of the areas afected by the cyclone; so you would have no problem. I have been in contact with my friends in Yangon. Yangon itself is functioning and the main sites could be visited; though you will definitely note the efffects of the cyclone on the surroundings, by that I dont mean suffering as in the delta areas, but I mean buildings damaged and trees fallen although much of them are being cleared, especially on the main roads. Yangon City Center appeared to have fared relatively better in comparison to the outlying districts on the whole although it was affected as well. Much of the e-mail connections as well as the telephone lines are still not functioning and although some telephone connections have been restored. The telephone connections appear to be better off than the e-mails ( it is the servers which appear to be put out of action). I would imagine that there are relatively few tourists there now that you would be able to turn up at the hotel and be able to get a room. If I were you, I wouldn%26#39;t miss the opportunity you have now to see Yangon, then continue to see Bagan, Mandalay and Inle where I am very sure you will be very welcomed!

    Trip to Myanmar mid-June

At the moment, we have only few tourist and if you already get the visa and tickets , please do visit. In tourist industry, everyone is look forward and want to well-come you.

As mention, you are able to get hotel and domestic airline tickets very easily.

Actually, most of the e-mail are phone lines are back already. If you want , you can try this e-mail ,aye@amtt.com.mm , info@amtt.com.mm, www.adventuremyanmar.com. I know that they are working. If you are looking for 3 star and above hotel, it is better to deal with travel agency then direct to hotel. You may get better rate. If you just looking for economy, it is easy to check in after you arrive Yangon.

Yangon is almost back to normal and other area which you want to go are not affected all.

Thanks for the information. I%26#39;ve decided to go. I have almost all the arrangements and everyone says it%26#39;s a good idea.

I just sent an e-mail to the people you suggested. I%26#39;ll report back here if I hear from them. I haven%26#39;t heard from anyone else I%26#39;ve tried to contact so far. I think the problem is the e-mail being out.

Any further advice or encouragement is welcome!

    thanks, travelgail

    Travelgail,

Do not forget to bring rain coat and umbrella. It is rainy now.

If you have trouble getting contact and if I can be of help, you can drop me a mail in my box. Please note that I am not self advertising or try to get any profit from this. I just want to help you and my some poor countrymen who looking forward for the tourist and because you said, you don%26#39;t get any contact.

Any other advice or suggestions is still very welcome!

Thank you and welcome you from Myanmar.

I just wanted to update everyone. I did visit Myanmar and the trip went very well. The cyclone is no reason not to visit Yangon (and certainly doesn%26#39;t directly affect travel in Bagan, Mandalay, and Inle Lake).

In Yangon, I did see evidence of the cyclone with large trees uprooted in parks and the windows still out of a few buildings I drove past. But the streets, electricity, hotels, infrastructure, etc. were all fine.

There were very few tourists in the country. My hotel in Yangon (the Summit Parkview) was still full, though, with relief workers. Many of them expected to be leaving by August or September.

In Bagan, there were very few tourists. Of course, June is low season anyway in Myanmar, but there were really hardly any tourists. I could identify them on two hands. This did lead to a few small inconveniences. At least one night I was the only person staying at my hotel (Thazin Garden) and they seemed a bit reluctant to turn on the generator when the electricity went out (which it did several times per day). I can%26#39;t blame them, I%26#39;m sure it was very expensive to do so for just one guest.

Also, while many of the souvenir stands near the various temples were closed, the people running those that were open were particularly persistent. And it did get annoying at times. I really tried to not let it bother me, because I tried to remember how much it must matter to people, but sometimes I was just hot and tired and it would get to me. At one point one guy trying to sell sand paintings (I%26#39;d already bought some from other people) followed me from one temple to another. He just had such a look of desperation in his eyes and voice as be begged me to buy something that I broke down and did so. The look in his eyes still haunts me. But no matter how desperate people are or how much I%26#39;d like to help, I couldn%26#39;t possibly have bought things from everyone who asked. I just don%26#39;t have that much money. Almost no one has THAT much money.

A few of the restaurants along the river in New Bagan were also closed due to lack of tourists.

In Mandalay, I tried to see the Moustache Brothers. I went to their house, but no other tourists showed up that night so there wasn%26#39;t a show. I did get to meet them and chat a bit and take a couple of pictures, though, so I%26#39;m glad I went.

I almost didn%26#39;t go to Inle Lake, because I thought I didn%26#39;t have time, but it ended up being my favorite place in Myanmar. The day I spent on the lake was at the top of my list. I was the only customer at almost all of the restaurants I ate at in Nyaungshwe. In fact, I had to go in and ask if they were open. Everyone said ';yes'; and then ran to fetch a table for me.

The Bangkok Air flight from Bangkok to Yangon was close to full. There were only 3 or 4 westerners on the plane, though. Immigration was very quick in the non-Myanmar passport line.

The Air Asia flight from Yangon to Bangkok was less than 1/2 full even though Air Asia has cancelled a bunch of their flights.

So all and all, I%26#39;m glad I went. Thanks to everyone here for your earlier advice and encouragement.

    cancellation domestic flights July-August???

Many people are now saying that things in Myanmar are somehow going back little by little to normality, but I鈥檝e just heard that domestic flights scheduled in July 鈥?August and September and operated by all of the three national carriers will be cancelled until further notice, it seems breaking news.

    Can anybody confirm this??

Since I鈥檇 be interested flying out to Bagan from Yangon next month, what would you suggest then?

How much would a taxi cost?

    marcos.

    cancellation domestic flights July-August???

    Dear Marcos,

They still flying but reduce e some places . For example, last week , no flight to Bagan . I believe it is due to very very few tourist. They still fly to Mandalay, Heho and other place which most local fly.

In their weekly schedule , their are still flight to Bagan . However, they reverse the flight schedule qutite frequently. So , it may be your luck that if enough passenger , they may fly.

Next month , usually Spanish season and if they will get enough tourist , they will fly.

For the taxi, one day is around USD 50~60 but it may go up too due to fuel cost. To Bagan and the taxi have to come back to Yangon, they may charge you around USD 240 , I guess. If you really interested, I will ask around and back to you for today price .

    cancellation domestic flights July-August???

Normaly, it in the odd season, yet there%26#39;s a schedule, depend on the inbound visitors, there%26#39;s a ticket agent named SUN FAR, they chartered flights.

For this year stagging or low visitor, even domestic visitor, very very low.

I%26#39;ve news, Air Mandalay, only operate 1 ATR 72, probably stop doing business.

Air BAGAN and Yangon Airways operate only according to the flow of visitors. So, you need to call when you arrive is the best!

I have just spent 2 weeks in Myanmar and took 4 internal flights with Yangon Airways. Every flight was on time and perfect - fantastic service. No problem at all.

    any recent in-country flight info?

We%26#39;re heading back to Myanmar in late September/early October, and are wondering if anyone can provide any recent info on flight schedules. I%26#39;ve heard on Thorntree that there have been big cutbacks...has anyone had recent experience you can share?

    any recent in-country flight info?

All three airlines cancel the Bagan flight due to no tourist and fly only to Yangon-Mandalay-heho-Kyaing Tong- Tachilake and either Sittwe or Daiwai (Tavoy) during previous months.

However, Yangon airway fly back to Bagan as per their schedule and I believe other two air lines too but they fly once a day only. Before they fly twice a day to Bagan ,Mandaly and Heho , the toursit spot.

Usually, toursit back at September and October .So, they will fly back.

    any recent in-country flight info?

    Thanks for the info, mgzaymin.

We%26#39;ve been once before, and are planning on getting a littler farther afield this time. We%26#39;re going to head back to Mandalay upon arrival to meet up with a driver/guide we met last time and really adored. We%26#39;re hoping to do some more %26#39;exploration%26#39; via road from there.

Our last trip, we did the usual Bagan-Mt Popa-Mandalay-Inle-Yangon-Bago circuit. This time, we%26#39;re going with a lot less structure -- we%26#39;re basically going to see what comes. Do you have any recommendations about places we could explore via car from Mandalay as a kind of road trip, we%26#39;re thinking about 5 nights? Last time we did go check out the snake pagoda, and did the ';ancient cities'; tour...so not looking to do that again. We were thinking of checking out Pyin U Lwin, which we didn%26#39;t get to last time, and then...? Do you have any suggestions?

After Mandalay, we want to head back down to Yangon and go to either Chaung Tha or Ngwe Saung since they%26#39;re both drivable from Yangon. A lot of travel agencies are trying to steer us away from Chaung Tha because ';only locals like it, not tourists'; -- but we LIKE interacting with locals! Do you think we%26#39;d be disappointed in it? Not looking for luxury, but to meet some more wonderful Myanmar people and make new friends there. We plan to stay at the beach 3 nights, then back to Yangon for 2 before heading out.

We love your country, and can%26#39;t wait to return. Any insights you can share would be greatly appreciated!

First , I get information that Air Mandalay did not fly to Bagan in this month too.

For Mandaly, they fly every day, morning flight.

From Mandaly, you can drive to Pyin Oo Lwin and Thibaul (Si Paul). After visiting Pyin Oo Lwin and Thibaul, you can drive to Monywa , which is about 5 to 6 hrs drive from Pyin Oo Lwin. As usual, most of the Myanmar visit are pagoda and temple , so I am not sure you still interesting. However , you can visist following in Monywa.

    1. Thanbode Temple, over 500000 buddha images built in 1930.

    2. The Bodhitahtaung Temple , over 1000 siting buddha images under 1000 bodhi trees.

    3. Recently open the world tallast standing Buddha statue.

    4. Powintaung caves, situated in cliff which houses over 400000 images. It consists of 947 sandstone caves dug out of the hills and considered by archaeologists to be the richest collection of mural painting and Buddha%26#39;s statues.

From there you can drive through Pyay and then proceed to Chaung Thar.

    Than something like this.

    Day 1. Arrive Yangon.

Day 2. Fly to Mandalay and meet your driver and proceed to Pyin Oo Lwin. Visit Pyin Oo Lwin and Thibaul. Overnight at Pyin Oo Lwin.

Day 3. Drive to Monywa. Visit 1~3 . Overnight at Monywa.

Day 4. Visit Powintaung caves and back to Monywa. Overnight at Monywa.

Day 5. Drive to Pakkoku (about 4 hrs drive). Overnight at Pakkoku or continue drive to Pyay.

( Here, I am not so sure about how many hours to Pyay , but I think about 8 hrs. Also on Pakkoku, I am not sure, you can get the decent hotel or guest house in Pakkoku. So get your driver advice.)

From Pyay, you can proceed to Chaung Thar without come back to Yangon.

O.K, now Chaung Thar and Ngwe Saung.

Ngwe Saung is more expensive than Chaung Thar and in terms of beach , it is much more cleaner and more clear water .

Chaung Thar have more local and but lots of decent hotels and guest house where tourist can stay. Since , you have give your nick name as ';thebeerhunter'; I%26#39;m sure that you will enjoy more in Chaung Thar because of seafood.Seafood are cheaper and more availiable in Chanung Thar and more local restaurant than Ngwe Saung.

So, head for Chaung Thar but I just want to remind you that September and early October is consider still rainy season and may not be much people in beach. So , prepar to arrive on weekend. In the weekdays no much people.

Onbehalf of my country and my people, thank you very much for consider to return to our country ,especially, in this hard time.

mgzaymin, thanks very much for the wonderful recommendations!! I%26#39;ve got a lot more reading up to do in my Myanmar guide, on some of the places you have recommended. I really appreciate you taking the type to reply back in such detail.

Even though we%26#39;ve seen many already, seeing more stupas, temples, and buddhas is still very interesting to me (where we are from there aren%26#39;t any of these at all!) so Monywa sounds like a great location to head to after Mandalay %26amp; Pyin U Lwin. I%26#39;ll read up some more on Pokkaku and Pyay as well, and we%26#39;ll see how to work all these in to our plans.

Thank you for being honest about Chaung Thar beach. We%26#39;ve decided that this is likely where we will head at the end of our trip. As it works out, we%26#39;re looking to head there on a Thursday or Friday, following your weekend advice -- so it seems meant to be!

We sent off for our visas this weekend. I%26#39;m really looking forward to our return trip very much!

Since you%26#39;re based in Yangon -- what recommendations within the city or close by do you particularly recommend? Last trip, we did the usual things -- Bogayoke Market, Shwegedon Pagoda, Sule Paya, went and checked out the riverfront, and the Strand Hotel...also did a lot of just wandering around to get a feel of the place. What additional things do you recommend someone to see in-town? Overall we%26#39;re planning to spend about 3 nights in Yangon this trip.

Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and information here. It%26#39;s very difficult to get up-to-date information on Myanmar from outside the country, so thanks for participating in a forum like this to keep us informed!

Have just come back from 2 weeks in Myanmar.

Did 4 domestic flights in the morning with Yangon Airways - all were fine. No time changes and all on time - fantastic service. No problems at all.

    Yangon - Bagan

    Bagan - Mandalay

    Mandalay - Heho

    Heho - Yangon

Very helpful and all exactly to the schedul when we booked them a month before - no delays. Better than the BMI flight I took when I got back into the UK! Delays and bagae issues! Yangon Airways were far better!

    Hi ChantelleG,

Thanks for the info! It%26#39;s so difficult getting recent information for travelers in country now.

Would you mind sharing some info about your trip? Where did you stay? What did you see? What were prices like? How was the weather? Etc.

I love personal trip reports, and they are really helpful for others (like me!) who are in the midst of planning a trip.

Any info you wish to share would be really appreciated!

    Hi, thebeerhunter,

I was away from internet . Here is the some tips near Yangon.

    Thanlyin (Syrium)

Once the center of foreign trade for all lower Myanmar. In 16th century Syrium was home to trading port of Portuguese, Dutch, French and British merchants. Later the Portuguese adventure de Brito established his own private kingdom. The ruin of a Catholic church built by an Italian missionary in the 18th century can still be seen today. During the colonial days the British have imported some one millions of Indian for rice cultivation. Syrium still host a great numbers of Indian population though Myanmar citizen but their customs and way of life are still very much determined by the Hindu religion.

Here you can visit Kyauktan, the pagoda in the river too.(Yelai Pharyar)

    Twantay

24 km from Yangon, reachable by road in an hour or by boat in about two hours on the Twantay Canal. The boat trip provides a view of the life along the canal while Twante itself provides interest as a center of pottery and hand-woven cotton cloth. There are over fifty pottery works. This craft has been handed down from generation to generation and is still carried on in the time-honored tradition. Twantay pottery is recognized and distributed throughout the country. Thousands of water pots flower pots, basins, jars of from 5 to 25 viss capacity are produced daily.

But I have to check and revert to you is I am not sure, what effect by cyclone on this two places. When I get the information I post you again.

what is the cost of Shan's people making a passport?

hi,i heard that if a Shan%26#39;s people want to make a passport gotta go to Yangon,is that real? how much the cost for it? how many times they has to go untill they get their passport?

what is the cost of Shan's people making a passport?

Yes, the passport office in Yangon. Tow times is enough ( one for applying and second for taking passport ).

Flight and Boat Travel & a couple of other questions.

Hi! Four of us are going to visit Myanmar in September (9/10-22) and have pre-arranged flights %26amp; hotels in-country. Reading other queries, it appears that the %26#39;afternoon%26#39; flights are dicey. We are depending on an afternoon flight Yangon-Mandalay. Any information on that or is it too far off to know/guess?

Also, we are hoping to take a river-boat, not a %26#39;tour%26#39;, but 4 seats on a safe boat, from Mandalay to Bagan, on September 15 with some chance to take pictures and perhaps stop in one or two places along the river. What are the chances that we can find river transportation for this? What might it cost?

Are the %26#39;balloons over Bagan%26#39; still running? Or have they stopped due to shortage of customers?

    Thanks....

Flight and Boat Travel %26amp; a couple of other questions.

I can%26#39;t answer much but I can tell you that Balloons over Bagan only operates in the ';high'; season which is October(ish) to March(ish), even in the better times. We wanted to do it last year when we visited in May but they just don%26#39;t operate in the low season.

I%26#39;ve been told by my travel agent that there%26#39;s only one flight a day between Yangon and Mandalay currently, and that it%26#39;s in the morning. I%26#39;ve heard this from other sources as well. But your guess is as good as mine whether that will still be so in September. I think the key is to be flexible!

    Good luck on your journey!

Flight and Boat Travel %26amp; a couple of other questions.

You can check with Adventure Myanmar. They have some boats in Mandalay and may able to quote you. Their address is aye@amtt.com.mm or info@amtt.com.mm.

    Their web site is www.adventuremyanmar.com

I will check with ballon over bagan tomorrow and will let you know but I expected that they will not fly yet . September is still rainy season and I don%26#39;t think they fly.

Flight, yes, you will know only when you arrive or one week before.

    Kalaymyo

Hi All. My little family is looking at travelling to Myanmar in early 2009 (Jan/Feb) We are looking at also travelling to Kalaymyo (Chin State) on top of the usual itinerary. We would like to stay there for about 2 nights as we have some things and places we wanted to check out. We will have 2 young kids and was wondering whether if there are any clean, decent 3 stars + hotel around in the town? Also we have heard flights can be unreliable. Is that true? So far we found only 2 airlines fly there from Yangon. Air Bagan and Myanma Airways. Which one is safer and more reliable?

Any info on this would be lovely as we are abit nervous considering our 2 young kids.

    Thank you.

    Kalaymyo

Am sure resident posters will answer most of your questions but I can answer one -do not fly Myanmar Airways (I have seen the state of their aircraft and have read up on their safety records).

Have flown Air Bagan, Air Mandalay and Yangon Air with no problems and were impressed with staff standards, safety briefings etc (but I was not on the Air Bagan ATR that crashed earlier this year - no fatalities incidentally).

    Kalaymyo

Personally I never been there but there is a hotel call, ';Taung Za Latt Hotel'; . I do not expected about 3 stars because not much tourist go. Anyway if you really want , I will ask around and get back to you on hotel condition.

You can not fly to Kalay, you have to use the car and roads are very bad and I do not recommend for you if you have 2 young kids.As far as I heard from other people is roads are narrow , rough and if one of the car breakdown, you can not continue it.

Thanks for the info everyone. I did not know Air Bagan had a crash this year. We will keep in mind re: Myanma airways. Considering the new info we may have to reconsider although it would be nice to be able to make it there for once.

  • Yangon to Hanoi

    Hi everybody!

Am planning to visit Myanmar next August and wondering if there%26#39;s a direct flight from Yangon to Hanoi and what would be the price

    marcos.

    Yangon to Hanoi

    Hi there,

There is no direct flight from Yangon to Hanoi. You must take a BKK transit anyway. However there is an opportunity to take a connection flight by Thai Airways International to Hanoi via Bangkok as follows.

    1 TG 304 D RGN I BKK 0945 1130 0 CONNECT BKK AB6

    TG 684 D BKK HAN 1750 1940 0 30MAR08 16MAY08 AB6 9:25

One way ticket by TG- Thai Airways, it is currently 343 USD. This does not include Yangon airport tax 10 USD per person.

    Yangon to Hanoi

Thanks a lot for the info!

Well, it doesn%26#39;t sound to be that cheap indeed

I hoped that some national Burma carrier could fly out to Hanoi (or Vientane)..

Try airasia.com...has a direct flight to Hanoi at cheap rates!

    Sorry...I mis-typed that.

    you%26#39;ll need to fly

    Yangon - Bangkok - Hanoi

Yeap cheapest way to fly is with Airasia via bangkok.

    Myanmar to Vietnam?

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to fly from Yangon to Hanoi? or from Mandalay to Hanoi? and the cost of it?

    Myanmar to Vietnam?

    Karen,

Take flight via Bangkok or Singapore to connect with Hanoi.

    Myanmar to Vietnam?

No direct flight to Hanoi from Myanmar.

    Travel in Myanmar

We are planning to visit Myanmar in early 2009, spending 3/4 days in Mandalay, then Bagan, and then we want to spend up to 12 days in Ngwe Saung. We were planning to fly Bagan - Pathein and transfer to N,Saung, but all our enquiries so far have told us the only way from Bagan To N.Saung is fly to Yangon and then a 5 hour car journey to N.Saung at a cost of approx. $800. Is this right? Anybody have any ideas about this?

    Travel in Myanmar

Sofar, it is true that you have to fly back to Yangon then, drive to Ngwe Saung. Air Bagan, once announce that they will fly to Pathein but did not happen. For the cost ,I believe that they car have to be with you all the time weather you use it or not and they will charge per day . So, if you stay 12 days , they will properly charge you that amount. So, better fly to Ngapali.

    Travel in Myanmar

    Hi mgzaymin

Thanks for the information. We have now heard that we can take a taxi from Yangon to Ngwe Saung at a cost of about $150 each way - that sounds a much better price than $400! Does that sound OK to you?

If we change our mind about Ngwe Saung and go to Ngapali instead, is the Ngapali Beach Hotel budget, medium or top-quality?

We really are working hard on planning this trip and really looking forward to hearing everybody%26#39;s comments and suggestions.

Based on the prices/facilities quoted on their web site

    http://www.ngapalihotel.com/

and comparing them to the most expensive hotels on ngapali beach (Sandoway Resort %26amp; Aureum Resort and Bayview} I would place it as a 4* with the others 5*

(Myanmar * rating not International luxe)

I am not sure what will happen in 2009 but last year, some of the hotels have own transport which was much cheaper . Another question is how many person will travel? USD 150 sound O.K since they have to drop you and come back to Yangon. Then come and pick you up again.

Ngapali Beach Hotel is medium hotel. In Ngapali,

Lin Thar Oo, Royal Beach hotel , consider lowest level .

Ngapali Beach hotel, Sliver Beach Hotel is medium.

Then , Amazing Ngapali Resort, Sandoway Resort, Amata

The most expensive will be Aureum .

Bay view is between Ngapali Beach and Amazing Ngapali resort group.

Another two new hotel open and I don%26#39;t know how%26#39;s the condition. Thande Resort and Pleasant View Hotel.

    Hi

Many thanks for the information it is most useful. There will be two people travelling in the car and I think that is just for 1 journey to Ngwe Saung so I think it will be another 150$ for the return journey to Yangon, but I will check by email today.

That was also useful to know that maybe the hotels run a transport service I will also contatc them

Lastly the information on the hotels was most useful

it is always better to here first hand than go by websites as they can say anything.

Once again thank you so much I will keep in touch. I beleive it is a holiday today so I hope you have a good time.

    Regards

    Hi All

I have heard back from Yangon and the cost of the taxi is 320$ in total for 2 round trips, does this sound a bit over the top or OK.

I look forward to your comments.

I can not say for sure in 2009 since fuel price is keep going up but for today it should be not more than 250 USD .

Sorry, what I mention price is about 8 hrs drive for a day and it is only about 5 hrs drive and I believe it should be USD 200 maximum.

Do ask more to other travel agent or book at last minute. Your agent may afraid of fuel price go up and try to cover up the price if the fuel price go up , that what I think.

    Hello ,

We took a rent car from www.myanmartravel.info

for 120 usd to ngwesaung (each way)car was good and driver even brought us to elephant camp on the way that you can ride elephant also. Treasure hotel is ok .

    6 days in Myanmar

    Dear all,

Though there are many topic on itineray advise already however I still can not design the best built for my 6 days trip.

I planed to arrive in Rangoon 1st Sep and fly out by 6th.

My two main destination up to now is Rangoon ( ofcourse) and Mandalay.

Could any of you advise an itineray and normal budget for a day in Myanmar.

    Many thankss

    6 days in Myanmar

also is that possible to travel from Mandalay and back into Thailand via Chiang Rai.

    6 days in Myanmar

1 st Sept , what time is your arrival ?On the 6 th what time is your departure ? Since you have a very few days, better fly and instead of by bus.

Another question is you just want a brief visit or want to go slow ?

Air Mandalay stop fly from Mandaly to Thailand.

Yangon Airways have daily flight to Bagan according to their schedule from 1 st August to 10 August . So most properly they will fly to Bagan daily on September too.

Anyway here is my suggesstion :-

1 Sept . Arrive Yangon.. Overnight Yangon.

2 Sept . Fly to Bagan . Visit Bagan and overnight Bagan.

3 Sept . Fly to Mandalay and visit Mingun and Sightseeing Mandalay. Overnight Mandaly.

4 Sept . Visit Amarapura, Sagaing, and Ava (Inwa)

5 Sept . Fly back to Yangon, visit Yangon

6 Sept . Fly back to Bangkok.

Or if you do not want to fly,

Day 1. Arrive Yangon. Overnight Yangon.

Day 2. Visit Yangon morning. Bus to Mandalay at evening and overnight on the Bus.

    Day 3. Visit Mandalay .

Day 4. Visit Mandalay and late afternoon, back to Yangon by bus.Overnight on the Bus.

    Day 5. Visist Yangon.

Day 6. Fly back to Bangkok.

Please note that bus are not so comfort and can be delay.

    So , for your budget,

Budget Hotel including breakfast .. USD 15

    2 star , aroung USD 25

Food ... USD 10 per day.

Taxi ... USD 40 per day

Airfare ... Yangon -Bagan around USD 80

    Bagan- Mandalay around USD 40

Bus fare .. Yangon Mandalay . around USD 12

Airport tax .. USD 10 , only on departure to Bangkok.

and you need some entrance fees, zone fees from USD 2 to 10.

Many thanks for your helpful comments

    My schedule look clearer everyday

    First time to Myanmar....

    Hi all,

So I have never been to a country like this and have a few questions. What vaccinations/meds to you suggest. My doctor said Thyphoid and Malaria meds. Any advice?

I am also really concerned about the food. I have a sensitive stomach and my travel partner seems to think we can eat hot foods from street vendors here and in Thailand. Any advice on what to eat/avoid would be great.

We may be in some really small villages and I don%26#39;t understand what we eat. There obviously won%26#39;t be any restaurants there.

Oh yeah.......any one ever heard of Malarone effecting birth control? Do people advise me to take Malarone?

    Thanks so much.

    Julie

    First time to Myanmar....

    Hi,

    You need the following vacinations:

    Hepatitis A

Hepatitis B (optional, but advised in general for your own personal protection to have if possible; but I would advise if you are planning to travel around)

    Poliomyelitis (Polio)

    Tetanus

    Typhoid

You should also take anti-malarials; although if you are just going to be in Rangoon, Bagan and Ngapali the risks are lower. If you are planning to travel around the country, it wouild be best to take them. Ask you doctor for the specific anti malarials.

Malarone %26amp; birth control: Not that I am aware of, but check with your GP.

Malarone is basicaly for Falciparum Malaria, especially for the drug resistant one, which is the nasty one. It is prevalent in the remote or jungle/forest areas. I would check with your doctor depending on which parts of Burma you are planning to travel and for how long.

Food: Food in Burma is not as hot as the food in Thailand; but nevertheless, for the people of the west, could be spicey/hot. You should be able to ask for mild or ask not to put chillies. In any case, make sure your food is hot - temperature - that is to say cooked recently. You will find food vendors in Rangoon, say in the Bo Gyoke Market, cooking it when you order and you can see the cooking or at least see it on the fire. If you have a sensitive stomach, stick to mild types - no chillies; preferably sticking to restaurants rather than the road side vendors.

    Khayeethe

    First time to Myanmar....

    Thanks a bunch.

    Julie

    Hi Julie!

I have seen many people like you.You don%26#39;t need to worry to much about Malaria in Yangon ,Bagan,Mandalay and Lago Inle. Those are tourist destinations in Myanmar. You can choose meals whatever,Chinese food,Myanmar food, Italian food,European food, you can have in Hotel too.

You can bring food picnic from hotels.

    welcome to ask any question

    Thanks

  • Proper clothing/ women traveling in Myanmar

    HI,

I am going to Myanmar in a few weeks. I was wondering if anyone who has been there could tell me more about the appropriate attire for women traveling around. Can I wear tank tops? (wide shoulder ones/not a lot of chest showing) What about knee length shorts? Capris? What shoes would be o.k. for temples etc. Can I wear sandles?

    Thanks a lot.

    Julie

Proper clothing/ women traveling in Myanmar

In pagodas and some temples, you are not allowed to ware any foot wear, including sock and sandles. Must bear foot. Knee length shorts is not a problem but possible do not ware tank tops ( I mean for pagodas and temples, other places, it is O.K) .

    Wellcome from Myanmar.

    Simple Greeting Gift

Is it respectful in Myanmar to offer a small token-gift when meeting someone? If so, are there any simple, small %26#39;western%26#39; items that are appreciated as a %26#39;greeting gift%26#39; when you meet someone in Myanmar simply to show respect and friendship? Four of us will be traveling and enjoy meeting new people and creating a warm feeling in such opportunities. We do not wish, however, to offend or simply give something that is not locally valued.

    Simple Greeting Gift

They will happy to accept and treasure your gift especially western items that hardly get in Myanmar. They will proud to show their friends your gift.

    Myanmar - SIM card

How easy is it to get a SIM card in Myanmar suring visit...

    How much in U$???

    Thanks,

    Myanmar - SIM card

    Usd 2000~2500.

    Myanmar - SIM card

Sorry , I don%26#39;t read properly and just answer your how much question which you ask in VT too.

O.K , government is selling with USD 1500 and it is not easy to get unless you have a luck or you have very good contact with authorities.

USD 2000~2300 is depend on Market price and you can easy to buy but the owner name will not be you but widly use in this way. Again , in Myanmar phone call to oversea charges are very expensive . So , use at receive from oversea.

Have a Job Offer need to know living costs

My Friend who works in a leading Alcohol Company in India has got a Job offer which is being setup by a Chinese/Singapore based firm in Myanamar.

We would need to know what is the living costs on an average for a Middle Income Group person assuming accommodation is already provided.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have a Job Offer need to know living costs

It is hard to answer your question.I don%26#39;t know how many person in your family or are you alone ?

So, make it specific and drop me in my mail and I will answer for you.For example .. Car Hire per month, maid cost, meal cost per day , beer cost etc.

Have a Job Offer need to know living costs

Well I would say how much would it cost on an average month for a Family of Four Husband, Wife, Two Children aged 6-12 group to run a family assuming accommodation is hired.

Lets say a Bank Officer or a Mid Level Executive in private firm how much does he spend on an average to run a family. Just give lowest and max in that mid range.

    O.K,here is the example.

Car Hire .. around USD 400~600 per month

Your kids school in International School .. USD 300~700 per month per person

Your daily expenses for food for 4 .. USD 300 per month

    Thanks for the reply.

The person is expected to get USD 3500 per month along with furnished accommodation, car, driver. So basically Food, routine house maintenance, medical, School has to be take care by him.

    Issues in traveling in Myanmar

    Hello,

So my boyfriend is in charge of setting up our travels in Myanmar. (He has been there before) We are crossing over from Thailand to Kengtung and really want to make it to Bagan. Our visas went through but I am naive about this country and moving about in it. DO you think we will have a problem getting there? How would you recommend we get there?

Also, has anyone been to Yangon recently and could tell me if it is o.k. to be there (considering their recent natural disaster)

    Thanks so much.

    Julie

    Issues in traveling in Myanmar

    Dear Julie,

Thiland to Kyaingtong border crossing is O.K but you can go only Kyaingtong and have to go back to Thailand. As far as I know , your entry from Thailand to Kyaingtong is only border pass.Do not allow to travel to other region.

The same thing, if you come in from Yangon, you can go to Kyaing Tong but you can not go out from Thailand from there. You need to come back to Yangon.

If you want to go Bagan, you have to enter from Yangon only. Yangon is back to normal for quite long . I have seen somone post in this forum on ';Tour Guide Assistant'; who back from Myanmar after cyclone.

Don%26#39;t worry about Yangon. Yangon is safe and sound.

    Issues in traveling in Myanmar

Traveling to Myanmar overland is not recommended. Better to fly.

I returned from there recently. Yangon is ok. There is definitely some noticeable trauma, but the people of this city, and the entire country for that matter, are resilient.

When are you going? The weather in Kyaingtong this time of year is not conducive to trekking, which is pretty much the reason most people visit there.

Moving about in Myanmar is very easy. Just be smart and patient, and you cannot go wrong.

    Phaung Daw Oo Kyaung Festival

    Victor Aung

The Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival is one of the most famous pagoda festival in Myanmar and well known all over the world. The festival is held every year during the month of October and lasts for more than 20 days as the 4 Buddha Images are taken around the lake in a gilded barge pulled by hundrerds of leg-rowers in long canoes in front. These images sometimes stay over night at some villages and sometimes just stop over for a short while. Rowing competitions are also held. Pilgrims from all over the country come to this festival to pay homage to the Buddha Images. Many are from the plains, some from the mountains, while others are from small remote villages but everybody is here to gain merit and enjoy the festive air of the event. Foreign tourists are also fascinated not only by the religiouness of the festival goers but also with the generosity of the pilgrims as they pray in front of the Images and offer tissue thin gold leaves to put on the Images. This sense of true generosity and the religiousness of the people is evidenced by the Images itself for after decades of being gilded by countless number of gold foils they had become huge globes of gold.

I am coming not only for tourism but to buy local handicrafts.Where can I buy them. How do I get from Rangoon to Mandalay.

Also if anyone knows how to get from India to Rangoon?

    Thanks

    To Yangoon

India to Yangon .. via bangkok or via Dakka (Bangladesh)

Mid August .. Still raining season. Expect the rain in Yangon but other tourist spot like Bagan and Mandalay is not much rain compare to Yangon. For Cyclone , hard to predit as this Nagis Cyclone is the first time experience for all of us including who have 90 years of age.

Local Handicrafts .. Visit Bogyoke Market at Yangon .

Yangon to Mandalay .. By car or By flight. By car about 16~17 hrs and by flight about 1 1/2 hrs.

    To Yangoon

    Dear prachi,

You don%26#39;t have to worry anything about your goods to carry to your country! there are so many agent which can help you.NO problem to go and visit Myanmar for the moment. You take Yangon air way and if it is possible to train, you can do that ,interesting too!

    MrSmile

August some rain but no ciclone . Yangon to Mandalay better flight around ( 80 usd ) handicrift is the best in Mandalay . for more information www.myanmartravel.info you can get better price (flight and car service ) there also .

Air India have said that they will fly back at every Monday starting from October.Kolkata/Yangon/Kolkata.

So, if you want to visit in August , you have to fly via Bangkok.

    Hi Prachi,

The easiest way to reach yangon is from Kolkata by indian airlines.Unfortunately they have closed services for september. Other than that u can reach via bangkok(airasia, bangkokair). The cheapest flight to bangkok currently is from kolkata (airindia express).

There is no issue regarding carrying handicraft items and gems. You only have to get a certificate of customs from the shop where u buy gems from, they give it with out any problems. Let me know in case you have any other questions regarding yangon..i m currently in Delhi but have my business in yangon and will be reaching there sometime in mid-september..

    Myanmar Visa - on arrival

I came across this website for visa on arrival details - http://www.myanmarvisa.com/

Is this genuine? Can we trust this??

    Need advice.

    Thanks,

    Myanmar Visa - on arrival

You cannot get visas on arrival. The military government never went ahead with that idea and have not bothered to remove the website. Be sure to have your visa in your passport before you board the plane to Yangon!

    Myanmar Visa - on arrival

Taalaw, You are right and wrong. Wrong mean, yes, you can have your visa on arrival upon arrival if you are pre-arrange with your travel agent and you are staying where there is no embassy .

As far as I know, Myanmarvisa.com is real and kumarsps, I have seen quite numbers of people happy with myanmarvisa.com services if you go through in VTMail and this forum . Number of people write about this topic of Visa On Arrival.

You may not believe me since I am Myanmar and so, serch through in vtmail and this forum.

    Thanks both for the details.

mgzaymin, The country where I reside (United Arab Emirates) doesnt have Myanmar Embassy. So - I guess I can take the benefits of on arrival visa.

My alternative would be to make a halt in Bangkok for 2 or more days to get the Visa and proceed further.

    Lets see :)

Yes, you can obtain visa in Bangkok as well if you do not wish to take their package.

i have a VOA form letter which I will use. I am on a package tour. However my travel clinic seems to think that no one is getting a visa. I think their inof is incorrect that it would be a more controlled isssuance now

Certianly with VOA there would be someone wathcing you anyway

    Tour Guide Assitance

We are travelling to Burma in November 2008 specifically to vist my grandfathers war grave. We had a guide booked through Columbus travel, but since the cyclone have not been able to contact the guide (which we spent months building a repore with) or the travel agency. We are seriously considering not going because of this. Can anyone offer any solutions to our dilemma. My husband says dont go, but I am still in two minds.

    Tour Guide Assitance

I am sure reputable regular posters like mgzaymin will be able to give you a recommendation.

Beware of posters (normally on their first post) recommending a fabulous guide in Myanmar - it is normally a relative!

I have used guides from Asian Trails and Tour Mandalay in the past and never been disappointed.

What ever you do -do not delay your trip.

My wife %26amp; I started to visit Burma some 10 years ago whilst following her fathers footsteps in WWII whilst he was in the REME and fell in love with the country and its people and keep on returning (inspite of the Generals).

    Tour Guide Assitance

Yangon is back to normal for quite long time. All the communication is back to normal.I saw Columbus is still operation as usual . If you can not get contact drop your message to my mail and I will send your info to Columbus by fax or any other ways.

Asian Trails, Tour Mandalay also reliable company. If you can not get contact , I will recomment you another company. So, don%26#39;t disappoint.

As mention above, don%26#39;t delay too.

    Dear .

Each of us has our own comfortable way to behave in the world as we see it. best wishes with your decision.

    Marrying a Myamnar Girl

Hi I am an Indian. I would like to marry a Myanmar girl. Any idea on how to make this legalized in Myanmar? Like paperwork or certificate or attestations?

    How long will this take?

    Thanks in advance.

    Marrying a Myamnar Girl

Hi Kumarsps, remember me? Both of us are searching the same question for long time.I%26#39;ve got the answer....finally.Myanmar has a lot of races.Every state government has their own rules. If your girl friend is pure Myanmarnist, passport is cheap.But...if your girlfriend is ';THAI YAI'; race, its very complicated %26amp; very expensive. She should go to Yangoon immigration for twice. At first, she should fly over there to apply passport with her photo. The fees(not including air ticket)is 50,000 baht.second time she should pay 20,000 baht %26amp; take her passport.If......u are a Malaysian, both of you should go to Bangkok to apply married Visa(much more cheaper than Myanmar). Finally, congratulation both of you.You%26#39;ve done it.Wish you all happily after.(Ying Dee Dui)-thai language...^^

    Marrying a Myamnar Girl

Oh....forgot to reply your last question. Its about 6 weeks time from applying passport till she take it.If she now don%26#39;t have her ID,she has to make ID first.any way...i%26#39;m Malaysian.Makghal Sakthi!

Thank you so much for your reply.

Earlier I was looking for the details of passport, YES. Thanks for your comments / key points.

Now, I am looking for details for marriage...

I understand this is travel only forum.

But would appreciate if any can guide through this process or guide me to the right person :)

    Thanks one and all...

    eating

    Hi All,

I am concerned what I can eat while traveling in Myanmar and Thailand.

Do you think it is safe to eat fresh fruit or veggies? I will be there for two weeks, what do people eat? How do you go so long with no fruit? Does anyone soak their fruit in iodine. If so, where? The hotel sink?

My understanding is to just eat hot/cooked foods.

Thanks for your tips. I have never traveled to such a place before.

    eating

In Thailand you can eat as well as anywhere in the world, depends on what you like, from somtam to Mc-star-hut%26#39;s: happily the latter are nowhere to be seen in Myanmar where you will need to be a little more cautious, fruit you can peel is no problem and there%26#39;s a great range to choose from, fresh street food, especially Indian, is wonderfull and in many cases safer than a low end indoor restaurant, follow the usuall rules, if a place is busy it%26#39;s good, ice is possibly a bigger problem, certainly in Myanmar.

    eating

Have never had any tummy troubles in Myanmar although I have never eaten any where other than hotels, tourist restaurants and private homes.

Never eaten street food in Myanmar or Thailand although some hardy backpackers swear by it.

If you buy fruit out then wash it in bottled water before peeling and eating.

I am wary of buffets anywhere in the world , especially salads, and we always eat freshly cooked rice never reheated. Our Burmese friends will cook enough rice first thing in the morning to last the family all day and never reheat it but enjoy it cold at lunch and supper.

Two of my friends, who is first time to Myanmar just went back and one is very particular with food and one does not care .Both eat bananas , drink fruit juice, (mango juice and they like verymuch) Both went back happly without problem even we went to small town where no tourist facilities nor proper hotel.May be a luck.

Anyway try not to eat roadside food, eat at hotel or tourist target restaurant (moonson restaurant, green elephant restaurant ) where you may have to pay more but more safe.

Confirm what mgz says-certainly try Green Elephant in Yangon.

Eaten there at least 8 times - very good Burmese food, geared for tourist tastes-you can add the condiments to heat up the taste if you wish.

I think 4 of us ate their for $12 last time (excluding wine which can triple the bill so stick with the very good local beer)

The food in Myanmar is great. It%26#39;s inexpensive, tasty %26amp; the choice is amazing. The restaurants range from modern french to Indonesian,Mexican, all SE Asian food. Burmese food has been labelled as being quite oily, this maybe the case but it is damn tasty, not as hot as Thai food %26amp; not as spicey as Indian. The big hotels usually do buffets at a very afforable price. The Sedona hotal on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road (10mins taxi out of downtown Yangon) has an amazing buffet, you%26#39;ll have to go back at least ten times to try all thats on offer, it%26#39;s very high standard food at $17 a head, free glass of bubbly too. There%26#39;s far too many restaurants in Yangon to list, but as the previous post states, The Monsoon Restaurant, not far from The Strand hotel in downtown has exellent Burmese %26amp; SE Asian food, happy hour is from 5-7 everynight when all drinks are half price. I was there last week when the actor Matt Dillon was in town, we shared a few cocktails, a bizarre experience I have to say.

I%26#39;ve been eating street food here every week. The Indian %26amp; Chinese is fine %26amp; delicious, the barbecued fish is beautiful, most you can watch being cooked from fresh, there%26#39;s plenty of vegetarian options if you%26#39;re worried about the quality of the meat, Just make sure that if you eat meat that is%26#39;s well cooked.

I go to a local fruit market to get my fruit %26amp; it%26#39;s very nice indeed, the plums %26amp; pineapples are the juiciest I%26#39;ve had in a long time, the apples %26amp; oranges are of a good standard but the oranges can be a little pricey. Just wash the fruit %26amp; you%26#39;ll be fine. I know plenty of westerners here %26amp; all have no troubles at all with the food.

Come %26amp; enjoy yourself here, the people are wonderful, the food is awesome %26amp; the buzz of Burma is alive %26amp; kicking.
