We finished our Myanmar visit on 15th sept after spending 10 days in the beautiful country. We visited Yangon, Bagan and mandalay. Bagan won our hearts with it%26#39;s other-world surreal life style, Yangon wasn%26#39;t too bad either but mandalay was a big disappointment, except for the biggest book in the world carved in stone and the sunset from Mandalay Hill top. Most importntly it was the people, friendly, warm, sincere and awfully polite who won our hearts, we are planning already for a next trip in a couple of years, a lot longer and detailed hopefully. I opened this thread to thank all the members who gave us their input for visiting Myanmar and a special thanks to the walking encyclopedia of Myanmar Mr.Mgzaymin, whose tips helped us a lot to make our itenerary. Thank you folks.
Magical Myanmar.
I agree; Myanmar IS magical. A wonderful country and wonderful people. But I think the reason that most tourists are disappointed with Mandalay is because they rush through it and stick to doing and seeing the typical tourist sights such as the ';Biggest Book'; (who cares!) and Mandalay Hill. I really enjoy Mandalay, but I never buy one of those official passes and stay away from the beaten tourist track. I like renting a bike and exploring the quieter parts of town (yes, those DO exist) and visiting monasteries and teashops. I also visit one of the big orphanges in town (MBOA) on a regular basis. They have weekend English classes (from 1-3 pm) and are always thrilled to have native speakers drop by. Anyway, my point is: give Mandalay a chance. Besides the city itself, nearby towns such as Paleik, Mingun and even Monywa are worth a visit. Just don%26#39;t try and see ';all'; of Mandalay in a day or two like many tourists do.
