eating

Hi All,

I am concerned what I can eat while traveling in Myanmar and Thailand.

Do you think it is safe to eat fresh fruit or veggies? I will be there for two weeks, what do people eat? How do you go so long with no fruit? Does anyone soak their fruit in iodine. If so, where? The hotel sink?

My understanding is to just eat hot/cooked foods.

Thanks for your tips. I have never traveled to such a place before.

In Thailand you can eat as well as anywhere in the world, depends on what you like, from somtam to Mc-star-hut%26#39;s: happily the latter are nowhere to be seen in Myanmar where you will need to be a little more cautious, fruit you can peel is no problem and there%26#39;s a great range to choose from, fresh street food, especially Indian, is wonderfull and in many cases safer than a low end indoor restaurant, follow the usuall rules, if a place is busy it%26#39;s good, ice is possibly a bigger problem, certainly in Myanmar.

Have never had any tummy troubles in Myanmar although I have never eaten any where other than hotels, tourist restaurants and private homes.

Never eaten street food in Myanmar or Thailand although some hardy backpackers swear by it.

If you buy fruit out then wash it in bottled water before peeling and eating.

I am wary of buffets anywhere in the world , especially salads, and we always eat freshly cooked rice never reheated. Our Burmese friends will cook enough rice first thing in the morning to last the family all day and never reheat it but enjoy it cold at lunch and supper.

Two of my friends, who is first time to Myanmar just went back and one is very particular with food and one does not care .Both eat bananas , drink fruit juice, (mango juice and they like verymuch) Both went back happly without problem even we went to small town where no tourist facilities nor proper hotel.May be a luck.

Anyway try not to eat roadside food, eat at hotel or tourist target restaurant (moonson restaurant, green elephant restaurant ) where you may have to pay more but more safe.

Confirm what mgz says-certainly try Green Elephant in Yangon.

Eaten there at least 8 times - very good Burmese food, geared for tourist tastes-you can add the condiments to heat up the taste if you wish.

I think 4 of us ate their for $12 last time (excluding wine which can triple the bill so stick with the very good local beer)

The food in Myanmar is great. It%26#39;s inexpensive, tasty %26amp; the choice is amazing. The restaurants range from modern french to Indonesian,Mexican, all SE Asian food. Burmese food has been labelled as being quite oily, this maybe the case but it is damn tasty, not as hot as Thai food %26amp; not as spicey as Indian. The big hotels usually do buffets at a very afforable price. The Sedona hotal on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road (10mins taxi out of downtown Yangon) has an amazing buffet, you%26#39;ll have to go back at least ten times to try all thats on offer, it%26#39;s very high standard food at $17 a head, free glass of bubbly too. There%26#39;s far too many restaurants in Yangon to list, but as the previous post states, The Monsoon Restaurant, not far from The Strand hotel in downtown has exellent Burmese %26amp; SE Asian food, happy hour is from 5-7 everynight when all drinks are half price. I was there last week when the actor Matt Dillon was in town, we shared a few cocktails, a bizarre experience I have to say.

I%26#39;ve been eating street food here every week. The Indian %26amp; Chinese is fine %26amp; delicious, the barbecued fish is beautiful, most you can watch being cooked from fresh, there%26#39;s plenty of vegetarian options if you%26#39;re worried about the quality of the meat, Just make sure that if you eat meat that is%26#39;s well cooked.

I go to a local fruit market to get my fruit %26amp; it%26#39;s very nice indeed, the plums %26amp; pineapples are the juiciest I%26#39;ve had in a long time, the apples %26amp; oranges are of a good standard but the oranges can be a little pricey. Just wash the fruit %26amp; you%26#39;ll be fine. I know plenty of westerners here %26amp; all have no troubles at all with the food.

Come %26amp; enjoy yourself here, the people are wonderful, the food is awesome %26amp; the buzz of Burma is alive %26amp; kicking.
