Money ( Kyat) Question..
Hi Princeya
i always change at Summit parkview Hotel - shop at back of art supply shop - good rate, safe
Princeya-
When you change money, go with someone you trust or take the time to count it out and check the bills. Severely mutilated bills are sometimes included in the middle of stacks of kyats (500 or 1000 notes) and virtually nobody will accept them. I am not talking about foreign currency which must be pristine. I am talking about local currency.
That said, in dozens of transactions, I have only had 2 or 3 problems, but I was always with friends who knew where to go and they ALWAYS, ALWAYS checked the money.
I forget to mention that this exchange rate is for for 100 notes.
Please note that do not bring serial number start with CB, which you will get low exchange rate in Myanmar and do bring the new as possible including small notes. If your USD notes are old, some do not accept.
As tombonyc said, you will rarely have problems with moneychangers, but they DO happen. Personally, I just don%26#39;t like the ';vibe'; of changing money with some guy on the street or in the back of a market. The money is usually not as clean looking, and I HAVE been shortchanged before. Yes, you need to count all the notes ... and be wary of how they are folded. They can trick you that way. I prefer to change money at my hotel or guesthouse. The rate is not as good, but it%26#39;s safe and the notes are usually very clean (fresh off the press!). Also, you will almost always get a better exchange rate in Yangon than in other cities. The problem is changing TOO much the first few days in Yangon and then having to carry around big bricks of kyat with you for the next 2 or 3 weeks (or however long you travel).
